“Survival can be summed up in three words- never give up. That’s the heart of it really. Just keep trying.” (Bear Grylls)
I’ve been looking forward to this programme coming back to our screens for a long time. Whilst the world is eagerly awaiting the return of Game of Thrones, I have been preparing myself for The Island by Bear Grylls. Reality TV has become so fake over the years. Once Big Brother captured a sense of reality but now prime time TV is full of fame seeking youths, hoping and praying to be the next Joey Essex or Kim Kardashian.
The Island is different. 14 people are stranded on an island in the Pacific for 6 weeks with only a few pieces of survival equipment at hand. Grylls believes that when pushed to our limits our instinct to survive will be triggered and man’s full capabilities will be shown. I agree that in the Western world we are too mollycoddled; technology, supermarkets and convenient travel has made us complacent. The prospect of joining these brave participants, in what can only be examined as an experiment, appeals to my sense of adventure, yet in reality I’m not sure I could wrestle a crocodile or sleep amongst snakes.
Tune in to Channel 4 on Wednesday for the men’s island and Thursday for the women’s island; the difference in approaches to island living is surprising…
Could you survive?
